By Chris Hermosilla | 04/14/2010 - 16:00

Too much of a good thing … is awesome! Meet the Nintendo DSi XL, the newest version of the Nintendo DS portable gaming system. Nintendo’s made it a personal company mission to expand our concept of “video games” by including men, women and kids of all ages, and besides having fun, the touchscreen DS can help you train your brain, stay organized and even learn how to cook better! And with the DSi XL, Nintendo has taken “bigger is better” to a whole new level.

Being Latina, my family and I have always been very affectionate.  Every family and friendly gathering begins and ends with hugs and kisses no matter if there are 4 people or 20 people in the room.  While naturally inclined to hugs and kisses there is one kind of kiss I'm not a fan of - kissing kids on the lips. Don't get me wrong, I know some folks grew up with it and it's totally natural, blah, blah, blah. Good for you but it's not for me.

He Said, She Said
By Carla Molina Martins | 04/07/2010 - 18:00

In my Mami Diaries post last week I told you about my husband who thinks himself my personal Spanish dictionary. He fancies himself quite the authority on the language. Funny thing is he doesn't just reserve his corrections for words he thinks I'm faux translating but also for words he thinks I'm flat out making up. Think of him as the Latino friend who tells you you're using the wrong words for everything.

My Bilingual Better Half

My husband is not Latino, but knows quite a bit of Spanish. Growing up he spent many summers at a New Hampshire camp with lots of kids from Mexico and Venezuela. He learned most of his Spanish from the friends he made there (an equal amount of appropriate Spanish and plenty inappropriate Spanish as well). He is, by no means, fluent; but knows enough that I can't get much past him. He also knows enough to think he sometimes knows more than me, the girl who spoke Spanish way before she spoke English.

A few examples:

Census Time
By Carla Molina Martins | 03/24/2010 - 18:00

If you don't watch television or listen to the radio or go online or drive on the road (or live under a rock), you may have avoided all the hoopla for the 2010 census. I can't do a damn thing these days without being reminded I have to return my questionnaire. I understand how important it is to be counted; however, it is a tricky thing--that census form--with all it's pretty little boxes.

On Sunday, March 7, superstar Latinas took to the red carpet to celebrate the 82nd Academy Awards.  While Zoe Saldana wore my favorite dress of the evening, it was Jennifer Lopez that had my jaw dropping.  I know, this lady always looks fabulous.  Even when her outfit may not be so great she still looks gorgeous.  What makes me marvel, though, is that she is the mami of twins!  When I had only one child it was a project to get out of the house looking half way decent.

Pre-baby, I was a big fan of yoga.  I'd go once or twice a week to a local studio.  It was cleansing and invigorating and made me feel strong.  After baby, I could never find the time.  You can imagine my excitement when I discovered Itsy Bitsy Yoga, which is a program for enjoying yoga with your child.  I bought both books and have been doing the exercises with my girls since both were newborns.  However, I know my girls would love to take a real life class.  Unfortunately, we don't have

Hear Me Roar!

Did you know March 8th is International Women's Day? It's celebrated globally and draws attention to the "economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future." I'm not one to jump in on contructed holiday celebrations but being a mami and on top of that a mami to two baby girls on the road to womanhood, this is a day close to my heart.

A Love Letter to Moms of Colicky Babies
By Carla Molina Martins | 03/03/2010 - 11:08

Your precious, sweet angel you waited 9 long months for has finally arrived.  You anticipated cooing and angelic gurgly sounds complete with little foamy spit bubbles of love.  Instead you've found yourself with a wailing baby that cries non-stop.  You heard about colic but thought (wished, hoped) it happened to other folks and even if you did suffer through it, how bad could it really be?  Now you know. It's bad.

The Sweet Smell of Violets
By Carla Molina Martins | 02/24/2010 - 11:10

This weekend I found myself at Babies 'R Us with my girls.  I was waiting on Dessa to choose her box of band aids (she's obsessed) and I told her in Spanish she had to pick one so we could go pay for our carriage of baby stuff.  The mami in the same aisle overheard me and asked me if I knew where in the store she might find "colonia."  If you didn't know, I live in suburban New England where little Latino babies with earrings and azabaches are about as common as three headed aliens.  I broke the news to her that the store didn't carry any colonia (baby perfume) and even
