One of the most important aspects of vacation and travel is choosing a place to stay throughout a trip. Location, amenities, entertainment, room types, dining are just among the few items that have to be considered, especially when traveling with children or a large family. If your family is anything like mine, with a teenager, twin boys and an infant, you understand how challenging it can be to plan a vacation that makes everyone happy. It was wonderful and an absolute great convenience to find so many family-friendly options centrally located within Disney's Wilderness Lodge.
As soon as you arrive at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, you immediately feel like you are on vacation. The entire resort is surrounded by lush trees, natural landscape and the openness of the great outdoors. Situated on the shore of Bay Lake and inspired by national-park lodges of the early 20th century, the lobby has an 80+ foot tall fireplace and rocking chairs, hidden Mickeys, totem poles, wood carvings, teepee chandeliers and more. There are beautiful trails for jogging, bike riding, nature walking, and even availability to rent motorized boats or go fishing. Also, transportation is provided to all the nearby Walt Disney World Resort theme parks by bus or boat. Various room types to choose from can comfortably fit up to 6 people. Most rooms have queen or king size beds and offer bunk bed sets for families. All rooms have a two-sink vanity outside the bathroom (which is helpful when trying to get ready with children), a mini-fridge and complimentary Wi-Fi. Rooms on the ground floor have patios and higher floors above have balconies. A log-cabin atmosphere feel is highlighted throughout the room décor with carved-wood headboards, rustic fixtures and Native American design. For those needing extra space, The Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge offer studios, one and two bedroom villas complete with a full kitchen and can sleep up to 8 adults. The nightly fireworks from Magic Kingdom Park that can be seen throughout Disney’s Wilderness Lodge is a must-see treat.
Kid-friendly and fine dining are available throughout the property, including two quick service restaurants, two table service restaurants and one lounge. A fun place for the kids is Whispering Canyon Cafe. Located off the main lobby, it’s a western themed family style restaurant (BBQ and American cuisine) with special activities designed for families like "horse races". For example, kids are selected to ring the dinner bell and yell fun phrases like "come and get it!" or “food is ready!” in the lobby. Often they are rewarded with passes for free ice cream at Roaring Forks. A lot of cowboy banter with staff make it a unique experience for all. If you are looking for quick meals, Roaring Forks, is great for sandwiches, pizzas, desserts, etc. It’s near the pool area and is ideal when taking a meal break from recreational activities. Artist Point is popular for its Northwestern inspired cuisine and seafood, especially their signature cedar plank-roasted salmon. Artistically designed with high ceilings and large painted murals, the restaurant has beautiful views of the lake and Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. The restaurant is a wonderful option for an elegant dinner.
The recreational activities at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge are perfectly situated for families. Silver Creek Springs Pool, is a heated pool which is surrounded by boulder formations and pine trees. (Inside the lobby, a bubbling geyser runs outside to Silver Creek Falls and into the larger pool). My kids loved the large waterslide built into the rocks. There is also a hot tub, kiddie pool and playground. When looking to relax, check out Hidden Springs Pool that features a whirlpool spa. The twins are big fans of kid’s club and Cub’s Den did not disappoint. They ate dinner, played games, watched movies and made themed crafts. They loved the feeling of being at their own club and it gave us an opportunity to have a parents’ night out.
We highly recommend Disney's Wilderness Lodge. It is has recently started undergoing a refurbishment that is planned through 2017 and we are so excited to see all of the spectacular changes. With the flexibility of having all the amenities necessary for a full vacation experience located within Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, families can spend their time doing what is important – creating memorable moments together!
