State Legislators Announce Attack on Birthright Citizenship

The new congress just began, but already the Republican-held House of Representatives is attacking the constitutional rights of immigrants. A group calling themselves State Legislators for Legal Migration held a press conference to talk up a new initiative to take birthright citizenship away from children born on U.S. soil to undocumented immigrants.

To accomplish this feat, the legislators would essentially have to dismantle the 14th amendment, which guarantees citizenship to anyone born in the United States—period.  Pennsylvania State Rep. Daryl D. Metcalfe is the founder of State Legislators for Legal Migration and Arizona state senator Russell Pearce (best known for his introduction of the controversial SB 1070 law) is heading up the effort to rescind birthright citizenship.

Though the chances of an amendment to the constitution passing are slim (after all, there are only 27 in the history of the U.S.), it is scary that a group of lawmakers would even consider making such a fundamental change to a law that puts us all on a level playing ground. The 14th amendment—passed right after the abolition of slavery and before the enfranchisement of men of color—basically protects the notion that we are all born equal, regardless of color, sex, religion or socioeconomic status.
