A Peek Inside Venezuela's Beauty Queen Factory

Venezuela is known for a lot of things: Hugo Chavez, Angel Falls and having the most beautiful women in the world. For a country that is relatively small, it has churned an impressive number of international pageant winners, most recently Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza.

Behind every beauty queen is the 60-year-old Osmel Sousa, president of the Miss Venezuela pageant. He also runs a beauty school in the hills of Caracas, a large pink building where the country's most beautiful women go in search of perfection.

"In other countries there is no organization like there is here," says Sousa. "We have our school where the girls are prepared for this philosophy: to be beauty queens." The aim is "to make them perfect."

Check out this insider peek at the Miss Venezuela beauty school and tell us: Do you think these girls pay too high a price for beauty?

Mariela Rosario,

I'm a raging opinionista and I love to share my ramblings on everything from pop culture to food to stuff that makes me laugh & cry! I've worked in all types of media (TV, film, print) and was previously the online editor at Latina magazine before joining Mamás Latinas. On most nights you can find me working my way through my library of cookbooks or playing with my puppy Lola (my only child so far). I have a wonderful hubby who shares my passion for any and all kinds of travel. Together, we've formed a semi-professional wine drinking team.
