Rep. Raul Grijlalva (D-AZ) talked Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! yesterday about the recent senseless shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. He knew Giffords well and worked with her both in their home state and on Capitol Hill.
He called the shooting "frightening and very sobering" but noted that he was grateful for the fact that it seems as though Gabby Giffords will miraculously survive the shooting and is making great strides with her recovery. But it was the commentary he made on the escalating tensions in Arizona that were most interesting. "You have a culture that has been brewing and being stirred for close to a decade in Arizona—recently about healthcare, but consistently about immigration and the border—that has become polarizing, rhetoric has been ugly ... The fact remains that there is a tone and a tenor that's been set in our national dialogue that we can not get away from."
