Latino Teen Prodigy Composes for Latin Music’s Biggest Stars

At only 18, Jesus Manuel Nieves’ resume is incredibly impressive.

That’s because the Puerto Rican composer/producer first dove into the music industry at age 11, and since then has worked with some of Latin music’s biggest stars.

According to the Latin American Herald Tribune, Nieves (who is also known as Jhay El Superdotado – or Jhay the Super-gifted) received an award at this year’s Latin Grammy Awards. The teenage composer was recognized for his contribution to fellow compatriot Tito El Bambino’s Invencible album. The album brought home top honors on the Nov. 10 awards ceremony, including an award for Best Contemporary Tropical Album. Five songs from Invencible were written and produced by Nieves.

Currently, the young composer/producer is reportedly working on a few projects at the moment, according to the Latin American Herald Tribune. Who exactly is Nieves working with? According to the website, artists such as Puerto Rican superstar Ricky Martin and salsero Marc Anthony.

If we were Nieves, working with such artists would definitely get to our head. But not to him. In an interview with Spanish news agency EFE, the accomplished teen spoke about his success. “All this has taught me to be fairly unassuming and always the same,” he said, “because I may be enjoying success today but tomorrow might be a different story.” True!

When he was 11, Nieves only sang but gradually delved into producing and working in sound engineering.

“If it’s music, I want to learn it and do it all – it’s what I love and I can’t imagine doing anything different,” he said. “From the start I’ve given 100 percent to my music.”
