New York may have had an advantage on Fashion’s Night Out thanks to Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, but Miami definitely was the place to be outside the Big Apple!
Supermodel Niki Taylor, The Real Housewives of New York star LuAnn de Lesseps, Empire Girls star Julissa Bermudez, and Luciana Scarabello -- winner of NBC’s Fashion Star -- hosted a fall fashion show featuring the hottest trends for the upcoming season at Macy’s Aventura Mall.
Julissa, who also hosted a shopping party for fans last night, sat down with us before all the action, to talk about the future of the show, fall fashion trends, her most coveted beauty products, and a post-season finale update on her love life!
A fashionista at heart, Julissa confessed she likes to stay ahead of trends by checking out the line-up of her favorite designers during Fashion Week.
“If money were no object, I would dress in head-to-toe Oscar de la Renta – my fellow Dominicano! Other designers I admire are Gucci, Versace, and Dolce & Gabbana,” said the 28-year-old. “Pieces from these Italian fashion designers fit Latina curves so perfectly.”
“I also like to mix-up my wardrobe with pieces from Macy’s. They have some great collaborations with higher-end designers like Rachel Roy, who I’m wearing tonight! Nicole Richie has an upcoming capsule collection with Macy’s that I’m excited to see.”
Julissa keeps pretty busy in the Big Apple and depends on a handbag that keeps her necessities on-hand. What items can’t she live without?
“In my make-up bag you will always find a good concealer like Temptu’s S/B Concealer Wheel or Bobbi Brown’s Creamy Concealer Kit. I love keeping my lips hydrated throughout the day so lip balm is a must. One of my favorites is Rosebud Salve which keeps my lips from cracking. As a New Yorker, you will always find a pair of flats in my handbag. I’m so over heels!”
Julissa, and real-life best friend Adrienne Bailon, premiered their docu-series Empire Girls on the Style Network over the summer. Viewers had the chance to see the lives of these two Latinas as they build their entertainment careers and seek true love in the city. The show aired its finale in late August but the girls might be back for more in the future!
“We’re talking right now about season two, we have plans! Shooting a reality show like Empire Girls takes up a lot of our time and Adrienne is focused on getting her album out right now. I would love to be able to do another season if we are able to fit it into our schedules.”
Even though the girls enjoyed their experience on the show, Julissa confessed it was really hard to adjust having the prying eye of the video camera around constantly. “I’m not even going to lie, I had a little mini-breakdown in the beginning! It was overwhelming having so many people in your space for the first time. The experience is different than when you are on a set or when your hosting [a show] because you know what you are there for. After the first week I got the hang of it though, and totally forgot the cameras were even there. And so did my family which led to a lot of the candid moments with my mom.”
Nothing was off-limits on the show, not even Julissa’s love life. Across the ten episodes we witnessed the evolution of a woman looking for love to one that found it in a very unusual place! Back in high school, Julissa had a crush on a guy named Joe but was too shy to make a move. All these years later, he found her on Twitter and, even though he is not her usual type of guy, the two made a love connection!
“Joe, my little white chocolate, and I are still doing well. He is in New York right now and I’ve been travelling a lot between NY and LA so that has made things challenging. Who would have known that a little blast from the past was exactly what I needed!”
Julissa is gearing up to go on tour with Steve Madden this fall to promote his upcoming sleepwear line. Events, hosted by both Bermudez and Madden, are being set up across the country where fans can check out the collection and enter to win shoes and clothing.
