University of Wisconsin law student Joleen Rivera has already put her vast knowledge and infinite passion to good use by aiding the U.S. Latino population. When she completes her degree this year, she plans on leaving a long-lasting legacy for her community. The Puerto Rican academic is dedicated to challenging existing laws that hinder the progress of Latinos in this country. As a result of her commitment to social justice, Rivera is this week’s inspiring young Latina!

High School social studies teacher Silvia Moya inspires dozens of students every day. Teaching is not only this Ecuadorean’s dream, but her passion! It is through her own dedication that she is able to motivate other young people to reach beyond what they ever thought possible to accomplish goals they never knew they had. It is because of Silvia’s hard work and unrelenting commitment to making a difference that she has been selected as our inspiring young Latina this week!

Twenty-year-old Amy Davila has her eye on the prize. She consistently uses her rampant creativity to better herself and prop open the door for opportunity to come rushing her way. At the tender age of 14, Caitlin McGinnis already understands the importance of loving others, and she is putting that belief into action. We previously reported on the inspirational story of Mercedes Ramirez Johnson, who survived a tragic plane crash in 1995. Johnson lost her parents in the accident and suffered severe injuries. Despite all of the challenges she faced, the mother of four boys finished college and transformed her terrible experience into a hopeful story. In honor of her powerful experience, we are highlighting our 4 Inspiring Latinas of the Month.

This week’s featured Inspiring Young Latina of the Week is named Samantha Garvey. The Salvadoran-American teenager has inspired her community and our nation with her determination to succeed against all odds. In December, the New York student and her family were evicted from their home and forced to live in a homeless shelter. Despite facing this challenge, Garvey maintained a 3.9 grade point average and became a semifinalist for a prestigious science competition. We are so proud of her strength, courage, and perseverance!

This week’s featured Inspiring Young Latina of the Week is named Ariana, a Latina who proves that working hard really can pay off. Through studying and working simultaneously, this 23 year-old native of Mexico became the only full Latina on the NBA Los Angeles Clippers Spirit dance team, and she’s proud of it!
