Salmon is a true superstar for hair growth, thanks to being rich in protein, Vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids. About 3% of the hair shaft is made up of these fatty acids, which your body can't naturally make but needs to grow hair. It also helps to maintain your scalp and hair hydrated.
Eggs are essential to growing hair and for overall scalp health, thanks to biotin (a B vitamin essential). While it's extremely rare to be biotin deficient thanks to our bodies making biotin in the intestines, a lack of enough can still cause hair loss. Bring on the huevos!
These deliciious bright orange treats are full of beta-carotene, which turns into Vitamin A in your body. Having plenty of A in your diet helps to produce the oils that sustain your scalp (being low in A can leave you with dandruff). Other great options include pumpkin, mangoes and carrots.
While a diet full of dark, leafy greens is important, we love spinach because of its high levels of folate and iron. Iron deficiency has been found to cause hair loss (among other issues like weakness and fatigue), so start chowing down on this one.
Lentils are our favorite vegetarian source of iron-rich protein, which is necessary for hair cell growth. Plus, hair gets its structure from keratin and and if you have enough protein for keratin, then your hair will grow faster with stronger strands.
We admit it: avocados are our favorite Latin superfood! Thanks to the good-for-you monounsaturated fats, avocados are great for healthy hair (skin and nails, too!). Plus eating the "good fats" can lower your LDL (bad) cholesterol while improving your HDL (good) cholesterol.
Whether you love them in red, yellow or green, bell peppers are a colorful and delicious source of Vitamin C, which makes sure that there is enough iron in red blood cells to carry oxygen to hair follicles. Vitamin C is also used to form collagen, a fiber that helps hair get optimal growth.
Although we love all kinds of nuts, walnuts are key for hair growth because they are the only type of nut to have a significant amount of omega-3 fatty acids. They're also rich in biotin and Vitamin E. Plus walnuts have copper, a mineral that helps keep your natural hair color rich and lustrous.
While any kind of berry is good for you thanks to the natural antioxidants, we love blueberries because of the extremely high levels of Vitamin C. Since too little C in your diet can lead to hair breakage, we say it's time to stock up!
While it's best to stick to the 70% cacao or more kind, chocolate contains the anti-aging antioxidants flavonoids. They help hydrate your hair and skin, while also making you feel happier thanks to your brain releasing endorphins. Eat up!
