J.Lo's Hairstylist, Jen Atkin, Talks "I Luh You Papi" Hairstyles

When there’s a hair event with celebrity stylist Jen Atkin, you go. She’s famous for tending to the manes of just a few Latina ladies you’ve probably heard of—Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Alba, and Sofia Vergara—and we sat down with the trendsetting tress master to talk must-have products, music video looks, and bridal style. See what she had to say below!

We’re at Clear Hair Care’s event for their new Intense Hydration line; what are your favorite products to use on your clients?

Some girls like to get highlights and some have never colored their hair, so I would say the Damage and Color Repair and the Intense Hydration products are the best for any Latina girls that are going to be out in the sun this summer or any of the girls that feel like their ombre is making their hair too dry. Typically Latinas have a lot of hair, so I do a combo with products. If your roots are oily, but your ends are dry, I shampoo with the Volumizing Root Boost on the roots and shampoo the ends with Damage and Color Repair, then I condition with Intense Hydration.

Tell us about J.Lo’s hair in her new video:

For “I Luh Ya Papi,” we did three looks. One is amazing ‘60s huge hair and one is slicked back when she’s on the yacht. I actually used the Intense Hydration Treatment Mask instead of gel to keep her hair looking wet because we were out in the sun and I knew it would protect her hair and hydrate it at the same time. The third look we did was this top knot for the dance sequence, which was fun since I don’t think she’s done that in any of the other videos.

What would you love to see Sofia Vergara do for her wedding day hair?

I’ve done a ponytail once on Sofia. I’m all about trying new things and I get to have a lot of fun with Khloé Kardashian because she’s so open, but with Sofia, even when I’ve done her hair differently, I miss Sofia’s hair. She’s just know for her signature style and I wouldn’t want to see her get too far away from how she looks because that’s just not her.

Which trends and styles do you think will be huge for 2014?

I just cut Jessica Alba’s hair off a few weeks ago and I really wanted to keep it shorter in the back and longer in the front at a slight angle. Not anything too dramatic—we’re all about those relaxed waves…doing mixture of curling iron waves with straight iron waves and keeping the ends really blunt with a little product to make them piece-y. I still think the sleek look is really in, side-part sleek, low-part sleek and runway hair is still popular. Ombre is also not going away.
