1. Memorial Day Cocktails: Avocado Mezcal

Avocado Mezcal Cocktail

This refreshing frozen drink created by chef Junior Merino balances out its heat with smoky mezcal.


  • 1 avocado from Mexico, halved, pitted & peeled
  • 6 ounces white mezcal
  • 6 ounces fresh lime juice
  • 4 ounces light agave nectar
  • 3 ounces Midori
  • 2 ounces Cointreau


In a blender, combine all ingredients; whirl until combined. Add 2 cups of ice and blend until smooth. Serve in a glass rimmed with Junior Merino’s Cactus & Lemongrass Rimmer. Garnish with avocado wedge pressed in Junior Merino’s Hibiscus Rose Rimmer.

Yield: 4 cocktails

2. Memorial Day Cocktails: Black Maggie

Black Maggie Cocktail

Served at Bourbon Steak DC at the Four Seasons Hotel, this cocktail's combination of tamarind and salt will drive your taste buds wild. 


  • 1 ounce Tamarind water
  • 2 ounces Blanco Tequila (Bourbon Steak uses Don Julio)
  • 3 large cubes
  • 3 drops smoky mezcal (Bourbon Steak uses Del Maguey Chichicapa)


Shake and strain into a chilled cocktail glass that has been "frosted" with smoked salt.

Yield: 1 cocktail

3. Memorial Day Cocktails: Habanero Margarita

El Habanero

Created by mixologist Rafaela Dulanto & served at 1500 Miami, this spicy marg is well balanced and an easy crowd pleaser.


  • 2 ounces Don Julio Anejo tequila
  • 1 ounce of fresh squeeze lime juice (approx 1 lime)
  • 3/4 ounce Tamarind Habanero Sauce*


*Tamarind Habanero Sauce Recipe:  Boil together equal parts of sugar and water to create simple syrup, along with a desired amount of Habanero and Tamarind concentrate (add accordingly to desired spice). Once everything has been boiled together, strain the mixture.

Combine Don Julio Anejo, fresh squeezed lime juice, Tamarind Habanero Sauce in a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously and pour into a glass rimmed with salt. Garnish with a lime wedge.

Yield: 1 drink

4. Memorial Day Cocktails: Bloody Americano

Bloody Americano Cocktail

If you've been partying all weekend long, Junior Merino's take on a a classic Blood Mary will put you back on your feet kicking.


  • 1 avocado from Mexico, halved, pitted, peeled & diced
  • 16 ounces bloody mary mix (recipe follows)
  • 4 ounces whisky


In a pitcher, combine avocado, Bloody Mary Mix, whisky and ice; stir until cold. Serve in glasses garnished with sliced avocado pressed into Junior Merino’s Aleppo Pepper & Lime Rimmer.

Yield: 4 cocktails


Bloody Mary Mix Ingredients

  • 1 (46-ounce) can tomato juice
  • 3 ounces fresh lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons old bay seasoning
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons horseradish • 1-1/2 tablespoons Angostura Bitters
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons Tabasco
  • 1 tablespoon celery salt
  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper


In a large pitcher combine all ingredients; stir until combined.

Yield: About 6 cups

5. Memorial Day Cocktails: Hennessy

Hennessy V.S Horchata – AKA The “Hennchata”

Created at Chacho's Mexican Restaurant in San Jose, CA, this cocktail seamlessly blends with the sweet notes of traditional Mexican Horchata.


  • 1 1/2 ounces Hennessy V.S (50ml bottle)
  • 4 ounces Horchata


Fill glass with ice. Add Hennessy V.S and Horchata.

6. Memorial Day Cocktails: Hot Body Margarita

Hot Body Margarita

Served at The Garden by David Burke at The James, this simple, spicy marg doesn't rely on the sweet stuff - so it will keep your body looking hot all summer long!


  • 1 ounce Tanteo Jalapeño Tequila
  • Fresh lime juice
  • Agave nectar
  • 1 oz. club soda


Combine all ingredients over ice.

  • 1 ounce Milagro Tequila
  • Jalapeño, muddled, to taste
  • 1/2 ounce Agave Nectar
  • 1/2 ounce Watermelon Juice
  • Cracked Black Pepper, to taste


Combine all ingredients over ice.
