This humble looking cevicheria was definitely a nice gift to the Lower East Side. As soon as I walked in I felt like I had traveled to some random local joint on the beach in Mexico. If you chat with the owner, Allan Feldman—businessman turned chef—you'll learn that all the furnishings in this restaurant have a story. You may also find out that theyve run out of some dishes, since everything is made to order with fresh, local ingredients.

The food at this inexpensive spot is as authentic as the Mexican music playing in the background—minus a few dishes crafted to cater to vegetarians like veggie enchiladas. My fave were the Mole Tamales, which had a rich chocolate, spicy flavor ($7.50). The Chicken Pozole with hominy and radish tasted really hearty but was light on the stomach ($6.95). All in all, I had a delicious and satisfying meal at La Barra and would recommend a visit. Just bring your own beer or wine, they're still waiting on their liquor license.
