This cozy oasis of a restaurant makes you feel like you've stepped into a casita in a Mexican pueblito with its warm walls, cactus garden, and paintings (for sale) from a famed Monterrey artist who also happens to be the owner/chef Julieta Ballesteros’ mother. Creativity must run in the family because Julieta’s dish presentation is a work of art as well. Using her Mexican roots, her experience and the knowledge she gained studying at the French Culinary Institute Ballesteros has managed to create an incredibly unique menu.
I was initially overwhelmed by the combination of ingredients in each dish, but once I tasted the cuisine I realized that all of the elements compliment each other perfectly. The Pastel Azteca, (a chicken, cheese, beans, corn, salsa, and truffle oil casserole) and the Empanandas del Mercado (sea bass and shrimp in a squash blossom puree, mushroom, and goat cheese) were both equally hearty and delicious. But the dish that I was most surprised by was the Tostadas de Avestruz (seared ostrich with black beans, goat cheese, and guava–chile glaze). I’m not too familiar with Ostrich meat, but once I tried it I loved it., It’s very lean and light and has become a favorite of Crema regulars.
If you’re into Mole, wait until June 15th –June 16th to visit Crema. They will be having a 5 course dinner exploring all the different flavors of Mole along with cocktail pairings prepared by a Don Julio tequila expert for $65. To reserve just call and mention "Zagat Presents.” ¡Buen Provecho!
