Cabrito has this certain quality that makes you want to sit back and kick your feet up, even amidst all the people dining and drinking. With the beats of artists like Biggie and Madonna in the background, I settled in for what would turn out to be a great night—just as I predicted.
I started off with the Watermelon margarita ($10) which is tasty, just be sure to order it when it’s in season, otherwise it can be watery. My friend had the Sandia cocktail (mezcal, campari, watermelon juice and lime, $11), which was a perfect balance of bitter and sweet. The menu looked really interesting so we tried a bit of everything. The Shrimp and Tamarind ceviche ($12) was a delicious and different twist on a relatively traditional Latino dish. The pieces of pineapple mixed with the pumpkin pepitas worked really well together. The Jalapeño Rellenos was another innovative dish combining snapper, raisins, pepitas and it was super yummy! The Huitlatoche ($14), which is a type of corn that carries mushroom characteristics, was sautéed and served over a bed of corn tortilla, refried beens, greens, and cheese—this within itself was an experience. The taste of the huitlatoche was earthy and seasoned to perfection to make a very savory dish. This is a spot that isn’t afraid to steer away from your typical Mexican food. All the different combinations and flavors make for a party in your mouth, and who wouldn't love that?
