Cuban Sandwich

This popular sandwich is a combination of turkey, roast pork, ham, and Swiss cheese, piled high on Cuban bread and pressed with a sandwich iron until the bread is hot and crispy and the cheese has slightly melted. Since a sandwich iron is not an item found in most household kitchens, you can use a heavy skillet for pressing, or make the sandwich in a hinged nonstick grill or a panini press.

Preparation time

1/2 Cuban, French, or Italian bread
2 slices turkey breast
1 to 2 slices roast pork
1 to 2 slices cooked or boiled ham
1 slice Swiss cheese

1. Split the loaf lengthwise. Butter the inside of one half and spread mustard on the other inside half. Layer with turkey, roast pork, ham, and cheese and replace the top half of the sandwich. If you wish, lightly butter the outside.

2. Wrap the sandwich in foil and place on a heated skillet over low heat. Place a second, heavier skillet on top of the wrapped sandwich and allow the sandwich to crisp for 1 to 2 minutes. Turn it over and repeat on the other side for another 1 to 2 minutes. Unwrap and serve.
