3 Dessert Drinks to Sweeten Your Palate

In my relentless effort to enjoy a few more of the joys summer brings before the season changes, it occurred to me that frosty drinks are a simple way to stay attached to that airy feeling. For me, anything with a hint of sweetness and unexpected aromatic infusions help me get through an otherwise sticky day.

But instead of sipping on the average cocktail, why not try something different? Since you're probably skipping those high-calorie desserts to keep your waistline trim, try these summery drinks that are like desserts-in-a-glass. A sweet way to finish off a meal and the season.

1. Dessert Drink: Lemonade

B’s Honey Star Anise Lemonade

As of late, I’ve been thirsty for lemonade. Been drinking for breakfast, dinner and even at two in the morning. I’m not talking about Minute Maid or Chick-fil-A type lemonade, I’m talking about the freshly squeezed stuff you sweeten as you please. My choice for dulce: honey! L.O.V.E IT! Growing up, my mom would make my dad limeade and add some anise liquor for him to sip on while he’d mow the lawn! I thought it was strange, but was always amazed at the smell; especially juxtaposed with whiffs of freshly cut grass. I then started incorporating an “adult” version to my dinner parties and cooking lessons!

Here, a refreshingly, simple and thirst quenching summer drink. No more plain Jane lemonade. For that rustic and nostalgic look, serve it in recycled mason jars (I use old Ragu jars, too). I let my jars chill for a while because adding ice just waters it down; and a watered down drink is just no good!

In martini shaker, add ice cream, milk, Irish Cream and ice. Shake well. In small non-stick sauce pan, bring sugar to boil, stirring constantly with wooden spoon until sugar has liquified and is caramel in color. Remove from heat and continue stirring until caramel starts to thicken a little. Using tablespoon, drizzle caramel around the inside of chilled martini glass. Pour dulce de leche cocktail into martini glass.
Serves 2.

Ingredients:
  • 2 lemons
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 8-10 star anise
  • 1 liter water
  • ice
Method:

Add lemon juice and honey to room temperature water. Shake well. Martini shakers are good for this. Add star anise. Shake again. Refrigerate for 45 mins. Serve over ice, if desired.

2. Dessert Drink: Batido de Mamey

Batido de Mamey (pronounced "mah-may")

This drink is a must-have at least once a week during summer. Mamey is a yummy tropical fruit, originally from South America, though it is most commonly eaten in Mexico and Cuba. Yeah baby! We looooove this fruit! I would just about kill to have mamey everyday! It has a brown, kind of tough outer skin with a melon-y looking inside. The fruits texture is kind of like that of an avocado. The seed is pretty much useless unless of course you plan on growing it. You can actually buy frozen mamey at your local Latin market.

You can make all kinds of delectable treats with this awesome fruit, including my oh-so-damn-good milkshake pictured above. It has a very smooth and flavorful savory and sweet appeal. Mamey is also known to have aphrodisiac properties! Drink up!

Ingredients:
  • 1/2 full grown mamey fruit
  • 6 cups 2% milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • a hint of vanilla (optional)
  • crushed ice (optional)
Method:

Scoop out center of mamey. In blender, add fruit, milk, sugar, salt and ice. Blend on fast for about 3 minutes or until your shake is super smooth and creamy. Garnish with mint leaves!
Serves 4 glasses.

3. Dessert Drink: candy clouds martini

Candy Clouds Martini

This drink uber sexy, it's easy to make and you'll definitely impress your guests with the hardened caramel lacing your glass. Adding the caramel to my chilled glass made my new recipe worth the trouble! The drink's creaminess was quickly achieved by using Talenti Tahitian Vanilla bean gelato instead of ice cream.

Instead of sweetened condensed milk, generous shots of Bailey's Caramel flavored Irish Cream took it over the top! Maybe an unsuspecting choice, but I knew the combination of a gourmet gelato like theirs, with Bailey's caramel liqueur, would yield a perfect and beautiful drink. I omitted vodka, but if you must have it, I'm confident you'll become a bonafide mixologist.  Make it your new sexy drink, 'cuz it's just that amazing.



Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Talenti Tahitian Vanilla Bean gelato, softened
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 3 shots (1 1/14 ea.) Bailey's caramel Irish cream
  • 2 shots (1 1/4 ea.) vodka (optional)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • Ice 


Method:

In martini shaker, add ice cream, milk, Irish Cream and ice. Shake well. In small non-stick sauce pan, bring sugar to boil, stirring constantly with wooden spoon until sugar has liquified and is caramel in color. Remove from heat and continue stirring until caramel starts to thicken a little. Using tablespoon, drizzle caramel all around the inside of chilled martini glass. Pour dulce de leche cocktail into martini glass.
