Hats Off to Pork Pies and Fedoras

Hats are everywhere this season! You've seen Fergie, Rachel Bilson, and various trendy girls around town wearing what are called short-rimmed pork pie hats and the more generously brimmed fedoras. (Here's the big difference between the two: while a fedora has an indentation at the crown, the pork pie is flat at the crown.)

As the weather cools, a wool or velour felt fedora will be the perfect complement to your casual fall outfits. Right now, for example, we're coveting Eugenia Kim's Simon fedora ($275, shopbop.com). But if you're already planning ahead for next spring, invest in a straw fedora--like the ones seen on the Spring '09 runways of designers Marc Jacobs and Charles Anastase--to wear with jeans, shorts and slouchy tops. A chic and cheap option is Spillane's straw fedora ($28, urbanoutfitters.com). No matter which style you choose, pork pies and fedora hats will be a key accessory for the months ahead.
