Costume Designer MARCO MARCO Reveals What It’s Like to Dress Selena Gomez, JLo & Britney Spears

Costume Designer Marco Marco

Costume designer MARCO MARCO has worked with some of Tinseltown’s most famous Latinas: Selena Gomez, Fergie, Jennifer Lopez…and he’s also the main man responsible for outfitting Britney Spears for her Las Vegas residency, “Piece of Me.” Oh, and he created Cher's sparkling Dancing with the Stars outfit, Ke$ha's rowdy party girl stage pieces, and Katy Perry's iconic cupcake bra worn in her "California Gurls" music video. (We told you he’s major.) So, we caught up with the entertainment industry’s biggest asset to grill him on his famous friends and steal his best style tips for Latinas—read what he had to say below!

How was it working with Britney Spears for her Vegas show?

I loved it! Britney was a blast to work with, and it was exciting getting to take on a show of that scale from start to finish.

Favorite costume?

My favorite costume is the copper crystal one piece that she wears in the Circus section of the show.

What inspired you when creating her various looks?

I tried to pull inspiration from her more iconic moments, and I worked with her to create the things that she was really interested in wearing.

Describe your favorite memory working with each of these stars: Selena Gomez, Fergie, and JLo

I love Selena's red macrame dress that she wore right before tour on stage, Fergie's green number from the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, and for JLo, probably a black elastic one piece that she wore in a music video.

What are your best tips for Latinas when it comes to dressing for your body type?

Be brave and try new things! Fashion should be fun and expressive—play with shapes and colors and see what works on your body.

How did you get your start in the fashion industry?

I started out interning at PetroZillia when I was still in school. I looooved it there and literally spent entire days there, sometimes leaving at midnight or later.  Nony Tochterman and her husband Yosi Drori were the designers behind the label, and Nony had a brother who hired me to assist one of the stylists on American Idol when I graduated.

What's the best advice you've ever been given?

Take full responsibility for everything you work on. That, and never blow up at anyone. The industry is small and you never know how often you're going to end up having to work with someone, so keep it cool.

Dream celeb to design for?

Sofia Vergara.

Which three items do you believe every woman should have in her closest?

I'd say a simple black corset, seamless panties, and a good bra. If your undergarments are on point, everything is going to look that much better.

What's your style philosophy?

I think style is individual. You have to experiment and find it. That's what makes it so alluring when you meet someone with a clear idea of what their style is. You get a sense of their journey and that's always very cool.
