Narciso Rodriguez, along with Marc Jacobs and Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy are the nominees for the 2009 Womenswear Designer of the Year award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America, WWD reports. In addition, Lazaro Hernandez is up for the Accessory Designer of the Year award.

Is this just a crazy, random coincidence, or was Narciso Rodriguez's Fall 2009 collection partially inspired by Café Tacuba? The Cuban American designer, who is a favorite of First Lady Michelle Obama, sent his models down the runway earlier this week in eye-slit headgear that bore a strong resemblance to the low-brimmed hat that's become a signature look for Rubén Albarrán, a member of the Mexican alt-rock band.

Less than a year ago Arlenis Sosa Peña was a dedicated student living in the Dominican Republic until designer Luis Menieur approached her on the street and changed her life. Intrigued by Peña’s look, Menieur sent her pictures to the Marilyn Agency, which signed her immediately. According to QUEM magazine, Madge personally asked Donatella Versace to book him as the new face of her eponymous fashion line. Luz, 22, will be featured as the new face for Versace's Fall 2009 campaign. It’s nice to have friends in high places, isn’t it?

Camila Alves might have it all—beauty, riches, a new baby and Matthew McConaughey by her side—but according to L.A. boutique Kitson, no one wants to shell out cash to buy her overpriced handbags. The Brazilian former model launched Muxo, a line of high-end bags and purses for men and women last August. Kitson says that they have only been able to sell half of the merchandise ordered, leaving them with a $25,000 deficit.

The 12th annual Fashion Group International Rising Star Awards were held in New York City on Thursday, and Sergio Davila and Carlos Campos tied in the men’s apparel category.
Everyone at the event agreed that this type of recognition is particularly helpful during these bad economic times. In stressing the importance of support, Davila told the crowd gathered at The Rainbow Room, “I hope to see you all at fashion week in Bryant Park. You are all invited.”
