Remembering Yves Saint Laurent Slideshow

These days the words "icon" is tossed around as loosely as a peasant blouse, but in this case, it applies. French designer Yves Saint Laurent passed away on June 1, leaving his indelible legacy upon the fashion-obsessed, culture enthusiasts and yes, even regular women. In his 44-year career, Saint Laurent not only transformed womenswear with empowering looks that would become the staples of a mujer's wardrobe (the peacoat, the pants suit and the safari jacket, to name a few) but he also helped shape the style of nearly every fashion heroine we know, from Salma Hayek to Nicole Kidman.

Back in 1971, celebrity matrimony wasn't quite the paparazzi spectacle it is today. Behold, the first rock star wedding. Nicaragua-born Bianca Perez-Mora Macias wed Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones in St. Tropez, and the soon-to-be Mrs. Jagger scored this trendsetting wedding dress from Yves Saint Laurent, which included a suit jacket that she boldly wore with nothing underneath.

Stars often save their most glamorous looks for the Cannes Film Festival in France, and this year was no different. Here, Salma Hayek shines at a Partouche charity poker event in this deep purple YSL gown with a strapless sweetheart neckline.

Without a doubt, one of the all-time most coveted shoes for women are Yves Saint Laurent's black peep-toe platform pumps. Kate del Castillo rocked them at GQ's 50th anniversary party in the Fall of 2007, and Sofia Vergara paired them with a classic sheath dress at Clive Davis's 2008 pre-Grammy party.

Another Latina who can't resist Saint Laurent's little black dresses? Cameron Diaz, who wore one to the 2002 Screen Actor's Guild Awards in Hollywood.

Effortless and glamorous all at once, Eva Mendes wore this vibrant blue and black Yves Saint Laurent gown to the kick-off event for the Metropolitan Opera House's Spring 2008 season.

The average women's suit is just as plain and stuffy as its masculine counterpart, but in an Yves Saint Laurent suit, every woman feels like a queen. Jessica Alba wore one to a 2006 Vanity Fair party in West Hollywood and was a presence to be reckoned with on the red carpet.
