Camilla Belle shines both on and off the screen. Growing up in front of the cameras, her style has certainly grown up, too! We caught up with the actress as she took the stage for Cotton's 2nd Annual 24 Hour Runway Show in South Beach to talk what’s in her makeup bag, her style icons and what she brought back from her most recent trip to Brazil!
In your commercial for Cotton, you get a chance to show off your personal style. How would you define your style?
It’s hard to peg down my style. I think you can see from the commercial that my tastes are always changing. I dress according to my mood, the event, the weather that day…. I am young, so I definitely take advantage of that, especially at events. I like to have fun with fashion.
What are your must-haves in your closet? Something you keep wearing or coming back to?
I think every person needs a great pair of jeans. Personally, I have a large collection of dresses. I’m kind of obsessed. With cotton dresses you can dress them up or down with jewelry and accessories so you can wear them out to dinner, brunch, to a party, wherever. I like having things that I can wear over and over.
What's your number one beauty tip or trick?
Well, I think the most underrated tool is the eyelash curler. When you just need something to perk up your face, it’s great. Say you’re going to the gym and obviously you don’t want to wear makeup, you can just have a little something that wakes your look up.
What are your top 3 must-have beauty products?
I love a good moisturizer. I use a few different brands, but I like Dermalogica. Chapstick! I have to have a lip balm always. I like Kiehl’s lip balm ($9, Kiehls.com). And a good mascara. I have this volume one from Armani ($30, georgioarmanibeauty-usa.com) that I really like.
You've grown up in front of the cameras -- what's the one trend or style you wish you could take back?
When I was younger, there were those tops with the triangle, pointy bottoms. We wore them to all the school dances and we thought they were just really, really sexy. (laughs) I don’t know what they’re called, but yeah, I’d probably not wear those if I had the choice to go back.
Oh, we remember those. Maybe they’ll come back in style!
(laughs) I will not be revisiting those!
What's one style tip you think people underestimate or don't follow enough?
My mom really instilled in me the idea of dressing appropriately; to be aware of what you’re doing and where you’re going. I think people nowadays don’t really pay attention to that. They wear these outfits with really sexy details when it’s not really appropriate. I’m not saying to be boring! I think you can really take an advantage of an occasion or a fancy event to dress up and show off, but being aware of where you’re going is really big for me.
If you were able to steal the wardrobe of one person, who would that be? Why?
I don’t think I could pick one person. I really love feminine style, so possibly Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly… those women were so chic and sophisticated. I think we’ve kind of lost that glamour and mystique.
What's your typical beauty routine?
It changes, but one thing I will say is that before I even start, every night before bed I take off my makeup. I never go to bed with it on! My mom and grandma, they always said that and thankfully I’ve listened. I’m a big user of moisturizer. And when I’m not working, I’m not wearing a lot of makeup. I’m letting my face breathe! I’ll put on some mascara, concealer and probably a lipstick. Recently, I’ve been into pops of color, like bright pink and fuschia. When I want less color, I’d use a mute nude lipstick or lipgloss.
What’s the one thing you’re glad you’ve done throughout the years, beauty-wise?
I drink a lot of water! I’m really big into what you eat and what you consume, and I believe it translates to how you look. My mom always emphasized living a healthy lifestyle – water, lots of sleep… I’m lucky I listened to her!
What’s your style weakness?
Jewelry. I just got back from Brazil, and I stocked up. I got these great rings, ones that go above your knuckles and in different places on your fingers, and this piece where it’s a cross but it lays horizontally. I love rings.
Who is your style icon?
I’d have to say my mom. She was a designer in Brazil and had her own line and she just has great taste. I’ve never had a stylist, it’s always been working with her. I’m also influenced by looks from the 40s and the 50s, those chic and feminine looks. I wish we dressed like that a bit more sometimes!
