Proving that a simple gown can be ultra chic, Jennifer Lopez stood out on Oscar night in 2003 in a flowing sari-like dress by Valentino. The classic minty-green gown resembled the vintage design of a Valentino dress worn by style icon Jackie Kennedy in 1967.
When putting together an outfit designed to win raves from red carpet critics, a star’s ability to choose the right accessories and hairstyle can definitely make or break her look. In 2006, everything about Jessica Alba’s ensemble—from her shimmering Versace halter dress to her wavy updo—came together for a flawless appearance that set a gold standard in Oscar night perfection.
With over a decade of Oscar looks to choose from, our favorite red carpet look for Cameron Diaz is still the pale pink Dior by John Galliano gown she wore in 2008. The subtle drapery of the dress, along with a Roger Vivier clutch, created a polished ensemble that was effortlessly beautiful.
Solid colored gowns are the norm at the Oscars, so we always enjoy seeing a starlet who thinks outside the box and opts for a two-toned dress. In 2005, Salma Hayek captured the spotlight in a deep blue Prada gown with sparkly black beaded details and a figure-slimming mermaid silhouette.
For the ultimate in glamorous, pull-out-all-the-stops Oscar fashion, no one tops Penélope Cruz. In 2007, Cruz epitomized fantasy fashion in an unforgettable pale ball gown by Atelier Versace.
In 2002, Halle Berry made Oscar history for her Best Actress win for her role in Monster’s Ball. In addition to taking home the coveted statue, the daring Elie Saab gown she wore—with a see-through top that called attention to her amazing figure—was another triumph for the star.
The fashion stakes at the Oscars are sky high, and announcing the award for Best Costume Design raises the bar even higher. In 2008, presenter Jennifer Garner rose to the occasion in a sexy flamenco-style gown by Oscar de la Renta, complete with flirty ruffles and a fishtail silhouette.
Beyoncé is a triple threat when it comes to Oscar style. In 2005, she donned three different looks to perform three Oscar-nominated songs at the show. But even Beyoncé’s onstage style couldn’t top the fiercely dramatic gown she wore down the red carpet. We love how the star’s striking diamond earrings by Lorriane Schwartz (who later designed her engagement ring) add sparkle to her inky black Atelier Versace gown.
Renee Zellweger is definitely a celebrity who knows what she likes in terms of Oscar fashion—Carolina Herrera has been the star’s go-to source for red carpet glamour for years. In 2003, Zellweger was radiant and relaxed in a sexy red chiffon gown with intricate embroidery created by the Venezuelan-born designer.
Diane Lane took center stage in 2003 in an elegant dress by Oscar de la Renta. We love how the influence of the Dominican-born designer’s background seemed to come through in the dress’s feathery skirt and off-the-shoulder tulle top.
