Sofia Vergara Chats About Her Sexy Style

As Gloria on ABC’s hit comedy Modern Family, Sofia Vergara has a wardrobe full of flashy, sexy clothes and over-the-top accessories. Would she wear any of it off screen? “Yes, but not everything at the same time,” Vergara laughs. “One item at a time, yes,” she says, adding that she’s trying to bring a little more sophistication to the character’s closet, “outfits that are more designer.”

Vergara is casually chic in tights, a sweater and boots, her favorite off-screen ensemble, when we chat on the Modern Family set.  “I am trendy sometimes, but I like basics also,” she says of her style, which is “a lot better now that I have more money, more access to things. When I buy something really expensive I know it’s something that’s going to last for a long time, like my Hermès bag.  I know it’s something I’ll wear my whole life.”

Partial to black, blue and burgundy, Vergara likes to shop department stores like Saks and Neiman Marcus “because you can find a lot of things in one place.  But for something specific I go to a boutique.  I love Michael Kors—very great for my shape,” says the curvy Colombian.

Proud of her cleavage, she nevertheless has a problem getting clothes to fit and for that reason rarely shops online. “I have to try things,” she explains. That extends to the shoes and boots that fill her closet, including recent purchases by Valentino and Giambattista Valli.  “They’re unbelievable,” she raves.

Looking back on her 20 years in show business, Vergara admits to her share of fashion faux pas. “There have been many times where I was like, ‘What was I thinking?’ but for that year it made sense,” she says, happy with the way her style has evolved.

Asked whose style she admires, Vergara is quick to respond: “Penélope Cruz looks amazing and impeccable every time you see her.”
