Why Do So Many Latino Celebs Go By More Than One Name?

When you're really famous, it's not enough to have just one name you have to have several! And, your name has to change constantly, with every phase of your career. Look at Pitbull—Mr. 305 had to rename himself Mr. Worldwide when he blew up this year. Here are five of our favorite celebs who are known by many names!

1. Multiple Names Jennifer Lopez

Don't be fooled by the many names that she's got  she's still Jenny from the Block! The Puerto Rican entertainer is most well known for her abbreviated and easy-to-say name – J.Lo.  But during an appearance on the entertainment show Extra, Lopez shared her most recent nickname, Lola.  The nickname was given to her by her husband, Marc Anthony.  “My husband calls me that sometimes, when he’s feeling nice towards me,” she said.  “When he’s loving me!”

The Cuban-American rapper, whose new album Planet Pit is in stores now, has kept us dancing for nearly a decade with his infectious club-ready music.  His popularity has grown steadily, having first been called Mr. 305 (the area code of Miami, Florida, where he was born and raised) to being called Mr. Worldwide.  Still, the 30-year-old is still Pitbull to most of us.  In a 2004 interview with The Washington Post, he explained the name: “They [pitbulls] bite to lock.  The dog is too stupid to lose.  And they’re outlawed in Dade County.  They’re basically everything that I am.  It’s been a constant fight.”

The late Celia Cruz became a staple in salsa music, earning her the title of queen of the entire music genre.  The singer, who died of a brain tumor in 2003, was dubbed La Guarachera de Cuba in her native Cuba for her enormous popularity and vocal talent.  According to Fania.com, Cruz was also known as Gran Señora for her “integrity, human condition, and solid morals”.

The reggaeton artist first got involved in the music genre when it was in its early stages in Puerto Rico – which is perhaps why all of his nicknames exude power, like The King or El Jefe, which means The Boss.  As for the 34-year-old’s most popular name, Daddy Yankee, it is the equivalent of ‘Big Daddy’. In Puerto Rican slang, ‘Yankee’ means someone who is big and powerful.

The Mexican pop-star is best known for her name, La Chica Dorada, or The Golden Child.  There’s little mystery as to how the 34-year-old singer/songwriter got that nickname – she began her career at the age of ten as a member of the Mexican children’s pop group Timbiriche.  La Chica Dorada is also the title of her debut album, which was released in 1992.

The Puerto-Rican reggaeton artist has run into friction with others in his music genre for calling himself El Rey de Reyes, or The King of Kings.  “Everyone can say whatever they want,” the rapper told Don Francisco in an interview, with a laugh.  Fans may also want to call the recording artist by his real name, William Omar Landrón Rivera – the name he used when he starred in the movie Fast Five alongside Vin Diesel and fellow reggaeton artist Tego Calderon.
