What to Watch for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month: "Five"

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month and in honor of it, we wanted to highlight an upcoming film centered on the disease this week. Five, an anthology of five short films in one movie, explores how peoples’ lives are affected by breast cancer. The film stars one of our very own cover girls – part-Puerto Rican actress Rosario Dawson and premieres next Monday at 9 p.m./8 c on Lifetime.
The film, which highlights the experiences of each character from the moment they’re diagnosed with breast cancer, is star-studded both in front of the camera and behind – each short film is directed by Hollywood heavyweights such as Jennifer Aniston and Demi Moore. Besides Dawson, other cast members include Jeanne Tripplehorn (Big Love) and Taylor Kinney (The Vampire Diaries). It takes only one glimpse of Five’s trailer to sense the blend of tremendous struggle, emotion and hope in the film.
Dawson stars in the film titled Lili, directed by R&B songstress Alicia Keys. In the film, the part-Boricua plays a career-minded woman named Lili who seeks out her sister to help break the news to their mother that she has breast cancer. The news of her diagnosis takes Lili on a journey towards mending issues she once had with her loved ones.
We think it’s important to raise awareness of the risks of breast cancer and how much families are affected. According to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the disease is the most common cancer among Latinas – a tough pill to swallow but very important to know.
