WATCH: Sonia Sotomayor's Hilarious Appearance on 'The Colbert Report!'
02/05/2013 - 14:26 ||
Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor stepped outside of her usually serious and straightforward character Monday to promote her best-selling memoir My Beloved World on Comedy Central's satirical late-night show The Colbert Report. The Bronx native was all laughs as Stephen Colbert joked with her about the Supreme Court not being a very fun place.
"Do you know that when I was sworn in, the security officers threatened to eject anyone from the room who clapped? And they scared my family so much that for the first time in my entire life they stayed silent," Sotomayor laughed.
As for how she could be so self-reliant—growing up poor and injecting herself with insulin as a child with Diabetes—and a democrat, Sotomayor set the record straight.
"Surprisingly enough…I'm not a democrat. I'm an independent. I'm registered to no party," Sotomayor said. "I believe in the Constitution."
Referencing her book, which is printed in Spanish and English, Colbert asked why we need to know this much about Supreme Court justices.
"It used to be nine faceless white guys up there," Colbert joked. "And America ran great—for the most part."
Sotomayor said people are generally interested in her story. "I think the most important message of the book is no, we're not nine faceless people." You tell 'em!
