U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor shared intimate details about her divorce to Oprah Winfrey on Oprah’s Next Chapter. The 58-year-old Latina justice was married to her high school sweetheart Kevin Noonan in 1976 before the couple divorced seven years later.
In a sit-down interview with Oprah, Sotomayor breathed a heavy sigh when asked why her marriage failed.
“I think when you marry young, you run risks… and the risk that we ran into… that you grow in different ways and in different directions,” she said. At the time, Sotomayor said she was completely consumed with work when she began as a D.A. in New York City’s Manhattan borough, and added that she takes full responsibility for her part in the marriage’s failure. Sotomayor and Noonan, who is a patent lawyer, remain friends.
As we can imagine, Sotomayor remains an extremely busy woman and told Oprah she hasn’t had time to date since she was confirmed as a U.S. Supreme Court Justice. After all, the woman does work at the nation’s highest court.
“But at some point, I’ll pick up my head and say ‘It’s time to date again,’” Sotomayor said.
Oprah’s Next Chapter airs on Sunday at 9 pm ET on OWN.
