UPDATE: Sofia Vergara on Ed O'Neill's Jane Lynch Comment: "He's Not Crazy"

ABC

Did you think that Sofia Vergara should have won the 2010 Emmy for Best Supporting Actress? Well, you're not the only one!

Ed O'Neill, who plays Vergara's TV husband Jay Pritchett on ABC's Modern Family, recently told TV Guide Canada that his co-star, Sofia Vergara deserved to win the 2010 Emmy for Best Supporting Actress over Glee star, Jane Lynch, who actually did take home the trophy.

"I love Jane, honestly I do," O'Neill said. "I'm dying to star in one of Christopher Guest's movies alongside her, but I don't think she should have gotten the Emmy for that part. [Sue Sylvester] is just a one-note character."

O'Neill went on to say that Vergara should have won. "Sofia is just so, so funny," said O'Neill. "I don't think people realize how hilarious she is. She's so sharp with her wit, it's amazing," added O'Neill.

We agree that Sofia is hilarious and we would have loved to see the Colombian actress take home the 2010 Emmy for Best Supporting Actress, but we're a little surprised that O'Neill would come out and say this publicly, especially since it might offend his other Modern Family costar Julie Bowen, who was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

For her part, Sofia wasn't bitter at all. When she heard she was nominated, she talked about how the nomination was her reward. "I was so excited to announce that my show was nominated, but to hear that I was nominated was a huge shock!” Vergara told Latina.com. “I am so honored to be in the company of all these amazing women. I feel like I've already won!"

Vergara, who was only one of two Latinas nominated for an Emmy out of 61 nominated actors gushed, "I am so happy to represent for the Latinas with this nomination," she gushed. "It's truly an honor."

And even though she didn't win Best Supporting Actress, Vergara's show Modern Family was the big winner at the 2010 Emmy's, taking home the Best Comedy prize over Glee, and winning awards for supporting actor (Eric Stonestreet) and writing for a comedy series.

TV Guide Canada has now retracted this story, and apologized for misquoting Ed O'Neill. Here is the complete retraction:

"Earlier this week, TV Guide Canada published a story misquoting Ed O’Neill’s recent comments about Jane Lynch’s Emmy win. Our writer did not mean to misrepresent Mr. O’Neill or anyone else involved in the story. He and TV Guide Canada sincerely apologize for this error."

Here is what O'Neill actually said:

“I’m one of Jane Lynch’s biggest fans. I love Jane Lynch. She is a genius. But at the same time I said ‘Sofia could win’ because … and I’ve only seen Glee a couple of … I’ve only seen Glee once. But I thought Jane’s role is rather one-dimensional. It’s kind of strident. It’s always kind of the same. I’ve seen her be much better. So I thought ‘Sofia’s funnier,’ and I think she is in these two comparative roles. Anyway, Jane won. But I was hoping that Sofia would.”

And here's what Sofia Vergara had to say about the whole thing:

“He didn’t mean it like that. I know Ed and of course he loves me and adores me and I so happy that, you know, that he thinks I deserve an Emmy, but he didn’t say it like Jane didn’t deserve it and I did."

Adds Sofia: 'He said to me, ‘What I was trying to say was that I would have loved for you to get it, that your character, you know, deserves an Emmy,’ but he was not making her less than me. I mean he’s not crazy!” she said.
