'Sonny With a Chance' to Continue Without Demi Lovato

Disney isn’t shutting down production on Demi Lovato’s star vehicle Sonny With a Chance while the 18-year-old star is in rehab being treated for “physical and emotional issues.”

EW.com reports that the hit show will be revamped during Demi’s absence, and will shift its focus from its title character Sonny Munroe (Lovato) to supporting actors Tiffany Thornton, Sterling Knight, Brandon Mychal Smith, and Doug Brochy. The writers plan on focusing on the show-within-the-show, “So Random!” in order to give Demi ample time to recover.

Sonny With A Chance will resume shooting in January, even if Demi isn’t available to return to work. “This allows her the time she needs to get well, without distraction or pressure,” a Disney Channel spokeswoman said. “Again, we extend our ongoing support to Demi and her family as she works to overcome personal issues.”

Sonny with a Chance stars Lovato as Allison "Sonny" Munroe, a talented young girl who moves from the Midwest to Los Angeles to join the cast of the popular teen sketch series, “So Random!”

In May, Demi’s face lit up as she talked to Latina.com about the show in New York City. Lovato told us that all the Disney characters she’s played, Sonny is the one she relates to the most. "She’s really quirky and over the top,” explained Lovato. “I get to embarrass myself with her."
