We recently shared a list of shows we felt needed more diversity, and now a new report claims that adding more racial diversity is quite beneficial for TV shows.
A new study, "Hollywood Diversity Brief: Spotlight on Cable Television," by UCLA's Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies revealed that more viewers were drawn to shows with ethnically diverse lead cast members and writers, while shows featuring less diversity attracted smaller audiences.
"Racial diversity does make a marked and measurable difference to television's bottom line," said Darnell Hunt, a professor of sociology at UCLA's College of Letters and Science and author of the study. "It's clear that people are watching shows that reflect and relate to their own experiences."
