EXCLUSIVE: Selenis Leyva on ‘Orange is the New Black’ & Latinas in Hollywood

Why do you think Netflix has such great success with these original series?

I think it fits our lives more. I don’t have time to sit there and devote time in short spans to a TV, even sometimes to a DVR. With this, it’s like I can literally sit there and watch a season – and I have! – in one sitting. Everyone likes the feeling of being in control of his or her own time.

What shows have you binge-watched?

Oh man, 30 Rock, Mad Men, House of Cards

You've been involved with a lot of projects. What's been your favorite project that you've worked on?

I would say working with OITNB has been a dream come true, but I also had an amazing time on Girls. Lena Dunham is just so giving and trusting. She’s brilliant. In the scenes we did get, she would just say to me “just go with it,” and as someone who has a background in improv, for me, that was a dream. I had the freedom to do whatever comes to mind. I’ve been really lucky to work with people who gave me opportunities and people I could also just watch and learn from. And Law & Order was fantastic – it was like my school for really working on camera-acting.

Who would you love to work with?

Omigosh, that's a good one, that's a really good one. I love House of Cards, I would love to do something with that cast. Can there be a crossover series? [laughs] but to be honest with you, I love Saturday Night Live. I would love to be a part of that someday – on the show, invited to host, work in the back [laughs]. We’ll see what happens.
