Ugly Betty producer Salma Hayek really loves bringing telenovelas to the U.S.

The Mexican actress and her producing partner Jose Tamez just sold an adaptation of the telenovela Los Roldan to ABC through Hayek’s production company, Ventanarosa. The telenovela originally aired on the Argentine broadcaster Telefe from 2004-2005.

Los Roldan is a rags to riches dramedy about a working-class man who saves the life of a very wealthy woman, who in turn hires him to become the President of her company against the wishes of her family members, friends and neighbors.

Of course, this isn’t the first time that Hayek has adapted a Spanish-language telenovela for an American audience. In 2004, she adapted the global phenomenon Yo Soy Betty La Fea, a Colombian telenovela, and turned it into Ugly Betty, which ran on ABC for four seasons from 2006-2010.

Like Betty, adaptations of Los Roldan have been produced in Colombia and Mexico. Hayek and Tamez will serve as co-executive producers of the series.
