VH1’s Behind the Music special will chronicle Ricky Martin’s career, the troubles of love, and how he finally found happiness. Tune in on Sunday, August 14 at 10 PM ET/PT on VH1 to hear the whole story behind his “Vida Loca.”
He will discuss his history with Menudo and his shooting star to fame despite being gay. “My emotions and what I represented were not compatible. [Be]cause I was a sex symbol, I was part of a boy band and my mission was to make girls scream. Maybe because of my religions, or maybe because society was telling me that my emotions, my feelings were not good, in fact they were evil. I was like how come I feel this? It is not right what I am feeling. Okay forget it, I don’t want to think about it, let’s keep working.”
The man behind “Living La Vida Loca” attributes some of his confusion over his sexual orientation to his upbringing in Puerto Rico. “You go to school and [the] first thing they ask you when you come back home is, ‘Do you already have a girlfriend?’ Automatically, society tells you that’s what you are supposed to feel. You’re not supposed to feel this and if you feel this, there’s something really bad going on.”
Even when his secret was in the midst of the rumor mill, Martin was aware of the possible repercussions of being outed and how fleeting fame can be. “That is all I worked for, that level of fame. That’s all I dreamed of, that’s all I wanted since the beginning of my career. And then when I had it, I was afraid. It’s like, oh my God I think I am so exposed.”
Although Martin has gone through many hurdles in his career and private life, now, with his partner Carlos and their children, he insists he has found happiness. “My partner, my boyfriend is very sexy, very smart, very compassionate, but the most important thing [is] he loves my children. It’s very beautiful. Super cool. I am very happy.”
