'Project Runway' Contestant Layana Aguilar Reveals She's Pregnant! (EXCLUSIVE)

Lifetime

When did you realize you wanted to become a designer?

I realized when I was really young when I was about like 9 or 10 years old. I would cut my own clothes and want to change it and make it my own. I would cut my mom and sister’s clothes so I made them cry a couple of times (Laughs), but eventually my mom got me a mini sewing machine and I started practicing with that. When I lived in Brazil, I lived in a very small town so you never really considered a career in fashion to lead to success so I always thought I would be a dancer or something else. When I moved to the U.S., I heard about F.I.T and Parsons and that really caught my attention. That also motivated me to reach for my dreams again.

How would you describe your designs?

My designs are very feminine and sophisticated. Especially since I’m from Brazil, but also lived in New York City for such a long time, I feel like there’s a great balance that I bring into my works from both worlds. I love to bring out sensuality in my clothing in a very classy way. Clothes are there to enhance you.

What are some of your inspirations?

I’m inspired by life in general. The smallest things make a difference. I could come up with a new design concept by reading a book or watching television. It really just depends.

What do love about being Brazilian?

What I love about being Brazilian is how close we are to our families. I’m six months pregnant with a baby boy right now and to me family is number one. I want my baby to have my same upbringing and be connected to that Brazilian culture. We are very happy people and just have such a bright spirit. You see hunger and violence in Brazil too, but people always try to stay positive and I really love that.
