In case you were wondering: Prince Royce is a really good kisser. Not that we’ve locked lips with the beautiful bachatero (only in our dreams), but he told us: “I think I do well with kisses! I think it’s the big lips.” Needles to say, Royce is a king among frogs. While we hold our collective breaths to see if we’re next in line to land a smooch, we chatted with Royce about his judging duties on Telemundo’s La Voz Kids, his favorite Latina Voice judge (hint: her hips don’t lie), and, of course, his first kiss.
Let’s talk about La Voz Kids. How has your experience been so far on the show?
It’s been great! At first it was a little weird. I didn’t really see myself as a mentor or coach for anybody but myself. Since I started my career, I’ve always judged my own music. Now I get to coach these kids that have the same dream and the same goal as I did when I was about 14. It’s really a lot of fun, and it’s very emotional—it’s hard to make these decisions because I know how important they are to these kids who are 11, 12. So it’s definitely a lot of responsibility—a lot of great parts where there’s excitement and happiness, and a lot of sad parts where it’s very emotional. It’s an emotional roller coaster.
Is it harder to say “no” to a child than to an adult?
For sure! I think everybody will agree with me that’s it’s definitely harder to say no to a kid than to an adult. At that age, I wished I had something like that, to go on TV and be able to sing, and be able to learn. I think every kid is coming out with something positive.
Let’s talk about NBC’s The Voice. Who’s your favorite Latina judge—Shakira or Christina Aguilera?
I got to say Shakira! I think Shakira has impressed a lot of people. I think that’s the great thing—you can really see another side of her. Personally, I’ve gotten to see another side of Shakira while she was on The Voice. I think she’s doing a great job, and she really is representing our culture.
