WATCH: Netflix is Taking Us Back to the Rise of Hip-Hop in 'The Get Down'

It was the late '70s — the last days of disco were on their way and the rise of hip-hop was just beginning.

Netflix is taking us back to this era where music was forever changed in their new series, The Get Down. Starring Shameik Moore, Jimmy Smits, Skylan Brooks, Justice Smith, Herizen Guardiola, Jaden Smith, Giancarlo Esposito and Shyrley Rodriguez, The Get Down takes audiences to the South Bronx in 1977, when disco was dominant but a new style that combined dance, art, music and language was emerging.

"The series is very true to the early hip hop scene — the people that were there are all in this story, as well as people you never meet until now," legendary MC Nas, who is the executive producer, said. "It's the first time we all get to see a series about the time hip hop began."

The Get Down premieres August 12 on Netflix. Watch the first trailer above!
