Maria Canals-Barrera on Selena Gomez: 'She's Still That Girl from Texas"

On the red carpet at last night's Teen Choice Awards we caught up with Maria Canals-Barrera, who stars as Selena Gomez's mother, Theresa Russo, on Wizards of Waverly Place, and asked about how the cast felt about the end of the show, and what it's like working with reigning teen queen Selena.

So we hear that Wizards of Waverly Place is coming to the last season.
That's just a rumor. But anything can happen.

You think the rumor will be true?
I think it might… Disney usually does like four seasons, and it's been such a wonderful ride and we have a whole season to end it. So you never know.

What's it like working with everyone on the show?
It's a blast! We have a lovely cast and Jacob—have you seen Jake? Oh, he's beautiful. The first day on set, I said 'Wait a minute, is this a Calvin Klein photo shoot?' The boy is just breathtaking! And we're doing another Wizards movie…super excited about that because the first one was so much fun.

What's it like working with Selena Gomez?
She's just a lovely lovely girl, so talented and very down to earth. Very professional and very sweet. I think she's just enjoying what's happening for her. It's what she loves and it shows.

Does she act like a young celebrity or would you never guess it?
You know what, she is very down to earth and she's very poised and she's still that girl from Texas, and I think she always will be.
