We are absolutely thrilled! J.R. Martinez took home the mirror-bally trophy last night on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars!
Since day one, we have been rooting for the part-Salvadorian Army veteran-turned actor, and we’re extremely happy that he snagged first place. The 28-year-old and his partner Karina Smirnoff beat out Rob Kardashian and Cheryl Burke, and Ricki Lake and Derek Hough. According to People, Lake was eliminated earlier in the show and Kardashian had a one-point lead over Martinez after both men performed perfect-scoring samba numbers with their partners.
Yet, the judges’ scores make up only half the final results, so the fate of both Martinez and Kardashian was left in the viewers’ hands… and we know now how that went. Throughout the season, Martinez has been a favorite on the show. “First and foremost, I want to thank everyone who voted for us for 10 weeks,” Martinez said after he won. “Thank you, America, for believing in us.”
In an interview with the Associated Press after his win, Martinez said he wants to sleep with his trophy. “Right now I’m going to put mine in bed and I’m going to tuck it in, and it’s going to roll around with me,” he said. Funny guy! But jokes aside, Martinez reflected on his overall experience in the dancing competition. “We’ve been on an amazing journey over the past three months and the fact that we’ve been able to create a lot of magic moments on the show,” he said, “and to top it off with this is amazing.”
Congrats to Martinez! Check out an Associated Press interview with Martinez below:
