It’s become a bumpy ride for J.R. Martinez on Dancing With the Stars. The Salvadorian Army veteran-turned actor went from landing two perfect scores on the show last week to suffering an ankle injury.
Martinez and his partner Karina Smirnoff made it one step closer to the finals and spoke to Access Hollywood afterwards about his ankle, which he re-injured. “All week when we were rehearsing it was like, ‘Oh man! If I nail this, it’ll be an amazing routine and it’ll give me an opportunity to show America a different side of J.R. Martinez that they’ve gotten to know,” he said.
Despite his injury, Martinez said the expectations he set for himself were high. “You always want to do well. You never want to let an injury or something kind of getting in the way,” he said.
Last week, Martinez and his partner Karina Smirnoff scored a perfect 10 from all three judges during both rounds. For their first performance, the pair danced a waltz to Burch Bacharach’s “What the World Needs Now Is Love,” which brought the show’s audience to their feet. DWTS judge and choreographer Bruno Tonioli liked Martinez and Smirnoff’s performance so much that he likened it to a “musical Valentine card.”
We love how positive Martinez always is and we wish him a speedy recovery because Lord knows, he’s going to need it!
