J.R. Martinez is one step closer to (hopefully) winning Dancing With the Stars! The Salvadorian Army veteran-turned actor made it to the final three of the dancing competition. Now, 28-year-old Martinez is pitted against Robert Kardashian and Ricki Lake for first place. DWTS contestant and soccer athlete Hope Solo was eliminated from the show.
It’s been an uneven road on DWTS for Martinez. Last week, the soap opera actor soared through the competition with his partner Karina Smirnoff. Together, the pair danced their way to perfect scores on the show. Then, things turned for the worst this week after Martinez re-injured his ankle. Known for his extremely positive attitude, Martinez did his best this week and told Access Hollywood that despite his injury, he still set high expectations for himself. “You always want to do well,” he said. “You never want to let an injury or something kind of getting in the way.”
In an interview with Latina.com earlier this fall, Martinez told us that he plans on becoming the second Latino to win DWTS. Hélio Castroneves became the first Latino to win Dancing with the Stars in season 5.
“As Karina says to me all of the time, she’s like 'You have Latin roots and you’ve got to make the Latin people proud.' She’s always reminding me of that. I definitely want to make my Latin community proud and let them know that I’m here to represent for all of us,” he said. “Growing up and being raised by a single mother, my mother always taught me how to dance cumbias and salsa, so I plan on putting all that stuff to use in all of these dances and take it all home!”
We can’t wait to see how Martinez does in next week’s finale!
