Jay Hernandez Talks About New Drama 'Last Resort,' Reminisces About 'Crazy/Beautiful!'

Mario Perez / ABC / Sony Pictures Television

Jay Hernandez, 34, is making his return on the screen with his new recurring role as Paul Wells in ABC’s military drama Last Resort. Latina.com chatted exclusively with the Mexican American actor about his new role, how he stays in shape, and more! Dig in below:

Congrats on your new role in the military drama Last Resort. Tell us about your character Paul Wells.

“I play an old friend of Sam Kendall's. I’m sent in by the military to basically try to kind of spy on Christine Kendall and turn against her husband. I’m brought in to shake things up a little bit and at first people may think I have bad motives, but as the story goes on you see that it’s more complicated than that.”

What do you think makes this series different from the rest of the military dramas?

“I’ve read so many storylines and usually you are just one set type of character. You are either the good or bad guy, but this show has so much development. The writers are really amazing and that’s always something you hope for as an actor. That’s one of the main reasons why I wanted to do this show.”

Crazy Beautiful was really the breakthrough role for you. How do you think you have grown as an actor since then?

“I’m so grateful for that movie. I was so young when I landed that role that I didn’t know that much about the world. Since then I feel like I’ve really built a career in acting and have been fortunate enough to work with amazing directors and producers. I would trade this for anything.”

Do you stay in touch with Kirsten Dunst?

“No, not really. I see her from time to time at different events and we have mutual friends, but that’s about it.”

How do you stay in great shape?

“I really try to stay away from fast food and I don’t smoke. I also run a lot. I love running.”

With Thanksgiving coming up, what are some of your favorite holiday traditions?

“I love the holidays. We don’t get to spend a lot of time together, so I really look forward to it. I have a lot of fond memories of my family and us just sitting around making tamales. Our Thanksgiving is pretty traditional, but also a hybrid of cultures.”

Would you consider fatherhood in your future?

“Yes, I do look forward to starting a family someday.”

What do you hope for your career in the next 5 years?

“As time goes on, I would love to continue playing different characters and continue exploring new roles as an actor. I think that if I believe in what I’m doing and I have faith then things will continue taking off for me.”

Catch Jay Hernandez on Last Resort tonight at 8pm ET/PST on ABC!
