EXCLUSIVE: Gloria Estefan on Her Glee Role - "Tough as Nails With a Sarcastic Edge"

FOX

Are you ready for tonight's Glee finale? The characters are graduating high school, life is moving on and we finally get to meet Santana Lopez's mom -- played by Gloria Estefan.

So what did the Cuban songstress have to say about the role? She shared exclusively with Latina.com that while she didn't get to choose her role, the character came after studying Naya Rivera, who plays Santana.

"The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. I [watched] Naya not just like a fan... [I studied her] mannerisms," says Estefan. "I already knew she was very sarcastic, but [she] also has a heart, obviously because she was hiding [her lesbian relationship]. So her mother had to be tough as nails, but with that little sarcastic edge."

Estefan states that even though her character is tough, she's also a "very supportive and loving mom." (A bit of a departure from Santana's abuela, who kicked Santana out after finding out she was a lesbian.)

Glee's season finale airs tonight at 9 EST (8 CST) on FOX. Will you be watching?
