In an unusual move for Univision's 'Premios Lo Nuestro' awards, Jencarlos Canela, the star from rival network Telemundo, has been nominated in the 'Artist or pop group revelation' category.
The Cuban-American heartthrob still can't believe he's accomplished something unprecedented in US Hispanic television, especially in Univision, where there's no mention - and of course, no nominations - of artists who are part of the competition.
Recent internal changes at Univision have already caused lay offs of several network veterans as well as old guard talent such as Cristina Saralegui. Although most of the changes have not sat well with the audience, it seems new changes such as this one will prove to be positive.
Jencarlos Canela found out about his nomination through his publicist Oswaldo Pisfil, and immediately expressed his excitement over Twitter - even thanking his own network's rival.
"CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE!! To my father especially!! To Oswaldo Pisfil, my God the best publicist, to Rudy Perez and the Bullseye production team!" he wrote in Spanish on the social networking site.
"Whatever happens, this is my first big accomplishment mi gente...Without you this would not have been possible. THANK YOU!!! You're the best fans in the world...I'm so proud of all my fans. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!l This accomplishment is ours...Thank you to Univision and Premios Lo Nuestro" he concluded in the wee hours of the morning to keep celebrating with his family.
Now, let's see what happens at the award show on February 17th. Will he walk the red carpet? Will he be interviewed on air on Univision during the pre-show special? That would be a great example of maturity and progress for both Telemundo, and Univision, who made the first step with the nomination.
