Last year, even Vegas oddsmakers would've bet on Mondo Guerra to win season eight of Lifetime's hit reality competition, Project Runway.
The Mexican-American designer wasn't just a fan favorite who racked up a series of consecutive wins on multiple challenges, but he was also a favorite of the judges (especially Colombian judge, Nina Garcia, who regularly praised the young designer's talents). As if that weren't enough to make him win-worthy, Mondo also had a compelling story—the openly gay designer revealed on the show that he was HIV Positive.
Still, in spite of all of this, Mondo lost Project Runway season eight, coming in second place to fellow contestant, Gretchen Jones, and prompting hundreds of Runway fans to take to Twitter to complain about his loss.
A Latino has never won Project Runway, but that could all change tonight, as Viktor Luna from Guadalajara, Mexico is one of the finalists in tonight's highly anticipated Project Runway finale (which airs at 9/8c). And with the finale airing tonight, we asked Nina Garcia why she thinks a Latino has never won Runway. "Project Runway is not a show about race — or age, or gender for that matter. It is about talent," Garcia wrote to Latina.com in an email. "There are so many brilliant creative minds struggling to make a name in fashion; at Project Runway our goal is to find and nurture the best of the best, no matter their backgrounds." Let's hope the best of the best is Viktor Luna tonight!
