We recently caught up with Jennifer Lopez to hear about her new role as L’Oreal’s latest spokesmodel, but soon got to talking about her other new gig: American Idol judge. Here’s what she told us:
How does it feel to be back on TV (from your Living Color Days)?
Oh! I didn’t really think of it that way. But, yes it’s fun. I’m having a great time doing Idol. We’re having a ball.
What do you think people will be most surprised about your personality when they see you judge AI?
I don’t think there’s anything surprising. But I think people should watch—they’re going to love it. We really enjoy each other. We’re having a great time. We have some great talent. It’s a new show—it’s the same show you know but it’s new because it’s me and Steven and Randy—it’s a different dynamic now.
It has a fresh, new feeling. Everybody is happy to be there and having a great time. Where else could everything that Steven and I have experienced and gone through and learned in our lives—where else could we pass that knowledge along? Even though we are judging them and have to give some harsh criticism sometimes, what we’re trying to do is to help them be better and to grow as artists.
Do you and Marc act as judges for each other?
My husband and I have helped each other grow as artists because you’re getting that artist perspective from somebody else. It’s just amazing. All the experience he has in the music world and performing has helped me so much. And all the experience I have from movies and film and acting has helped him.
Is it easy to give criticism?
No, not at first. For me it was trying to find a way to do it in the way that I wanted to be heard. But after awhile you find your stride.
Have you brought the kids on set?
Yes, the family has been on set. Marc loves going. He loves the show—and it’s like watching the show for hours a day.
Any Marc cameos planned?
[Laughs] No, no cameo for Marc planned.
Will you debut any new music from your Love? album on the show?
I might perform on the show. They’ve offered. I said, ‘We’ll see!’
