EXCLUSIVE: Gloria Estefan Talks About Shaking Up the Music Industry on 'Oprah's Next Chapter' (Video)

On the next Oprah's Next Chapterairing this Sunday, Gloria Estefan spills to Oprah her secrets of maintaining an identity as a new artist and staying true to herself. While eating a traditional Cuban-style lunch with the seven-time Grammy Award winner in her Florida home, Oprah gets the scoop on the icon's career, her successes and the bus crash that almost stopped her from performing again.

Read a part of the interview below and don't forget to tune in this Sunday, August 4 at 9 pm ET/PT on OWN:

OPRAH: So you fought to be able to be yourself.

GLORIA: Very much, yes.

OPRAH: To be able to express yourself the way you wanted.

GLORIA: Yes, and we fought to keep my name, they said we should change our name.  At the beginning they told us, you're too American for the Latin, you're too Latin for the Americans.  Lose the percussion, lose the horns, and I'm going, that's who we are.  We're not going to lose any of that or else why be a success?  We were never trying to chase that fame thing, we were trying to do music that we felt could do something new and was fresh and different.

OPRAH:  And then the fame thing just happened because you were doing what was new and fresh and different.

GLORIA:  Exactly.  Because if you are trying to do what's popular, you're already too late.  You're two years too late, because that stuff starts getting made before so you're chasing your tail and what's the point?  If you make something that is not you and you are successful, you have to perform that the rest of your life so you need to do stuff that you still like.  I still like all the stuff we did.

OPRAH: Gosh, I never thought of it that way.  Imagine having to perform a song you really didn't like in the first place.

GLORIA:  Exactly.

OPRAH: Over and over again.

GLORIA: And somebody forced you to do because they thought that's what is going to be a hit, what's the point?

OPRAH: Yeah.
