SPOILER ALERT: Emmy-Worthy Lauren Vélez Ends 7-Year Run on 'Dexter'

If you’re a diehard Dexter fan, you’re well aware of this sad news. But if you haven't seen the finale -- DO NOT READ! SPOILERS AHEAD!

Okay, now that we've warned you, Lauren Vélez’s character was killed off on Dexter’s seventh-season finale – thus ending the actress’ role on the show.

On the hit show, the 47-year-old Puerto Rican actress (and upcoming star of the planned biopic La Lupe) played Police Captain María LaGuerta, who suspected that Dexter (Michael C. Hall) was the Bay Harbor Butcher. Several twists in the episode lead LaGuerta to being injected with half a dose of the serial killer’s typical tranquilizer and later awakening to find herself facing Dexter’s foster sister Deb (Jennifer Carpenter), who ultimately shoots LaGuerta to her death.

In a YouTube video posted by Showtime last night, Dexter Executive Producer Scott Buck discussed the season finale and LaGuerta’s end on the show. He said it was very difficult thing to do.

“… But it felt very important in the evolution of the show and in Dexter’s character,” Buck said. “We had to make him legitimate as a serial killer – not just a superhero.”

We get it – but we’re still sad to see Vélez go.

“Lauren Vélez’ as LaGuerta is leaving a big hole right in the middle of the show – and we’re actually not looking to fill it,” Buck added in the video. “We want to feel the damage that’s done.”
