Dora the Explorer Day Declared in Over 30 U.S. Cities

From New York to New Mexico, cities all across the country are getting ready to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Dora the Explorer in style! More than 30 cities are observing Dora the Explorer day on August 14th to acknowledge the positive impact the Nickelodeon heroine has had on children over the last decade. But that's only a small part of the birthday celebration planned for Dora—undoubtedly one of the most influential Latina characters on TV today.

Nickelodeon kicked off the anniversary with the Beyond the Backpack initiative, which stresses the importance of school readiness for preschoolers. Celebrities from Salma Hayek to Shakira to Jessica Alba have all signed on to help support the campaign by appearing in PSA's and designing a special series of backpacks which will be auctioned off to benefit the Children's Defense Fund.

On Sunday, August 15th 8:00 p.m. Nickelodeon is airing Dora's Big Birthday Adventure, a new TV movie featuring guest stars Rosie Perez, John Leguizamo and Hector Elizondo.

Happy Birthday Dora!

Mariela Rosario,

I'm a raging opinionista and I love to share my ramblings on everything from pop culture to food to stuff that makes me laugh & cry! I've worked in all types of media (TV, film, print) and was previously the online editor at Latina magazine before joining Mamás Latinas. On most nights you can find me working my way through my library of cookbooks or playing with my puppy Lola (my only child so far). I have a wonderful hubby who shares my passion for any and all kinds of travel. Together, we've formed a semi-professional wine drinking team.
