If you’re a sucker for period pieces like Mad Men and mob dramas like The Sopranos, then mark your calendars for the premiere of Magic City tomorrow at 10pm on Starz. The drama focuses on Miami Beach in the 1950s, a time when Fidel Castro gained power in Cuba and plenty of the island’s elite fled to the shores of Miami. The plot line thickens as the mob and hotel tycoons fight for power.
We recently caught up with Dominik Garcia Lorido, who plays Mercedes Lazaro, at the red carpet premiere of the new drama series in New York City. Find out what the Cuban-American actress had so say about her new role, her father Andy Garcia's career advice, and more!
As a Cuban American, this role must be huge for you. What does starring in Magic City mean to you?
I'm just so honored to be a part of this. I grew up with my family telling us stories about what Cuba was like in the 50s, so this role means a lot to me. I feel like I'm honoring my family's legacy and where they came from.
What kind of advice has your father (Andy Garcia) given you about the business?
Just to work hard. He has always emphasized the importance of work ethic and being prepared.
What are some of your favorite Cuban sayings?
There are so many! That's tough [Laughs]. I love when my mom is eating something she loves and says, 'Qué divino!' ('How divine!'). Another one is imagínate (imagine). That one gets used a lot!
Where do you see your career in the next 5 years?
Honestly, I'm focused on the present. Things are just good right now. I would love to continue acting and working on roles that mean something to me...that speak to me.
