After Demi Lovato checked herself into rehab to treat physical and emotional issues in November, her hit show Sonny With a Chance — on which she plays the title character Sonny Munroe — didn’t shut down production. Instead, the series was revamped during Demi’s absence, shifting its focus from the title character to supporting actors Tiffany Thornton, Sterling Knight, Brandon Smith, and Doug Brochy and the show-within-the-show, “So Random!”
At the time, a Disney spokesperson said the change was made to give Demi time to recover. “This allows her the time she needs to get well, without distraction or pressure,” said the spokeswoman. “Again, we extend our ongoing support to Demi and her family as she works to overcome personal issues.”
However, Brandon Smith, who plays Nico Harris on the hit show, said this week that the name of the show has officially been changed from Sonny With a Chance to So Random.
“The thing is, with a show like ours—and any great show that I’ve seen in the past like The Wire and Seinfeld—each season you focus on a different concept…maybe a different character’s background,” said Smith. “Season two you were able to see the relationship between Sonny and Chad and how they got into it and how we really didn’t like it and now this season you’ll be able to see So Random and see where we are today in regards to being the teen idols that we are.”
We’re sad to hear that Disney plans to change the show's name, and we're especially sad for Demi. Last year, the actress told us that Sonny is the character she relates to the most. "She’s really quirky and over the top,” explained Lovato. “I get to embarrass myself with her."
